about

This album was recorded and mixed over the summer of 2022. It features a variety of guitars, 12 strings, lap steel and an 8 string guitar. I was experimenting with a sound I was referring to as "cabana core" and things kind of went from there. The major addition to the sound on this record is the 808 kick. It features in a few tracks. I also tracked a Roland D05 synthesizer on a lot of the tracks.

Three of these songs are actually some of my oldest solo material. The Future dates back to the year I first moved to Seattle. Cannibal Cafe dates back to 2012 when I was visiting Third Man Records in Nashville, I tried recording a song in the little recording booth there (sadly it broke down while the record was being etched). It was originally an instrumental called Frankensteins Motel. When Summer Ends was a track called American Babylon and it was about a dystopian world, and had lyrics about mutant waitresses with tentacle arms serving chemical cocktails... MmmmMmmm.

Mermaid was originally titled Algernon. This one actually features twice on the record, once with Synths, and a second time with different lyrics and more electric guitar. Family Man is actually the version I wanted to go with, but Mermaid's synth sound ended up fitting the main theme better.

Forwards in Life and Life In Rewind are sister songs. Life In Rewind was originally just an album interlude that went into When Summer Ends, but quickly became its own song over the course of a day. Forwards In Life was a solo acoustic outro for Family Man recorded in a single take.

Manic Monsters is the black sheep of the record but its certainly the harbinger of more to come. This one is a goth strutter. A vaporiwaved version of Manic Prairie Girl led me to give the song a new treatment. We bleached the roots and dyed it black! Sort of an homage to both Lou Reed and Peter Steele. RIP. The cello section and pizzicato strings was from a session with my good friend Eric from The Wiley Foxes.
